patchwork or 'pieced work' is a form of needlework that involves sewing together pieces of fabric into a larger design. these pieced works often become the top layer of a quilted blanket. relying on fragments and scraps of cloth gathered from worn or discarded clothing, patchwork is a way to recycle as well as build a cloth that holds memory - much like a photo album or scrap book - through the use of reclaimed scraps of fabric.

patchwork, weaving and industrialized textile practices of north america have fertile histories within colonialism, trade, labor and production.

piecework is an installation that draws upon these ideas of pieced work and textile history while functioning as a drawing machine predicated on the concept of labor. using the framework of patchwork symbolically, this project considers the relationship between a handmade drawing machine and the drawings it produces.
